Bulgarian Monasteries
Since the adoption of Christianity in Bulgaria a great number of monasteries and churches have been built throughout the country. They were not only places of worship but also centers of enlightenment which played an important part in the preservation of the Bulgarian identity during the Ottoman rule. Talented masters painted the murals in the monasteries, representing scenes from the Old and the New Testament. Many of the monasteries in Bulgaria have been preserved in good condition and attract thousands of visitors today. Besides an exciting mystical experience, a visit to a Bulgarian monastery can be a good opportunity to get a deeper understanding of Bulgarian spirit and culture.
